Deborah Howard
When we talk about a sense of place, described as the 'intangible feel of a location,' we often refer to the unique characteristics that make a place special. It also fosters a sense of attachment and belonging-touching upon the nuanced emotions tied to the concept of home.
Growing up on Cape Cod and my eventual return, a constant source of inspiration. The dynamic and ethereal qualities here continue to influence my work, with its ever-shifting nature shaped by time, weather, and tides.
For me, painting is a journey with an uncertain destination, one of searching and finding. I start with an idea or sketch that will only serve as a point of departure. I respond instead to the evolving composition, allowing imagery to emerge and develop until a moment of recognition, a sense of familiarity, arises. Then I know I've found the painting it's meant to be.
Through painting, I find clarity, comfort, and purpose-in this series, I also hope to gain a deeper understanding of what makes a place feel like home.
"My recent paintings continue to explore the elements that create this feeling-as color, atmosphere, mood, and form play a vital role in connecting to a specific time and place."

undercurrents
June - August 2025
undercurrents by Deborah Howard. In this exhibition, Howard presents a new body of work that draws viewers into the layered and shifting nature of perception. Her luminous surfaces and fluid compositions suggest movement just beneath what is visible — the ebb and flow of memory, the quiet pulse of emotion, and the hidden rhythms of the natural world.
Howard’s paintings invite a contemplative encounter, encouraging us to slow down and look beyond the surface. Each work carries a sense of tension and release, echoing the cycles of water and time, and offering space for personal reflection. In undercurrents, the artist creates an atmosphere that is both intimate and expansive, where the unseen and the seen converge.
