My paintings explore the role of brush strokes and mark making in the creation of representational art and communication. To write, we combine a series of marks which create letters, then words, to relay a message.

When do brush strokes become representational or do they always remain brushstrokes? Painting with intent to represent a subject requires deliberate acts of mark making and in the end it is still a painting. How do we artistically represent something which is already abstract? Can we paint a cloud - that object so abstract we look for familiar shapes in them even as they shift and change? Who is to say what is a brush stroke and what is a cloud? The same can be said about pattern and design. Morse Code is a series of dits and dahs which communicate while adding a bold design that may be viewed as just that.

I create these paintings in my studio in Amesbury, MA. Before living on the North Shore I lived in Boston where I had studios in SoWa and Jamaica Plain. I earned my Bachelor in Fine Arts from Cornell University and did most of my coming of age in Bangor, Maine.
